Let’s peek into the story world:

The phone rang. Ruth had tensed at every call since Susan disappeared. Now, for the first time, hope balanced the fear of what she might hear.

Tony answered, and she scanned his face for clues. “Hello?” His voice sharpened. “I can barely hear—where are you?” His knuckles whitened against the receiver.

She grabbed his arm. “Is it Lorna?”

“I’ll tell Ruth. I’m so sorry.” He fumbled the phone back into its cradle.

Tears welled in his eyes. Hope slipped from Ruth’s heart. “T-tell me what?”

“Oh, Babe …” His voice creaked like an ancient tree in the wind. “I—that was Lorna. I didn’t catch it all … She’s pretty broken up. Toronto police have found Susan’s body. It’s over.”

“But …”

A vein throbbed in the middle of his forehead. He swallowed, then spoke slowly and clearly, as if to a child. “Lorna and Alden had to identify the body. Hair, clothes, everything match, but there was no ID on her. Lorna said she was badly beaten, and probably raped.”

Ruth’s lungs emptied. Her chest heaved. Strained. At last her throat opened and sweet air flooded in. She choked on it.

Tony pulled her into his arms, and she pressed her face into the scratchy green warmth of his sweater, seizing the muffled rhythm of his heartbeat as an anchor.

Stepping out of the story …

Did you know? Every year, Nova Scotia sends a massive evergreen to the city of Boston for a Christmas Tree. You’ll find out why at a later stop on the blog chase.

  1. Wow! I always wonder if the author is giving away too much of the story in reviews, online launch parties, etc. I suppose it is a delicate balance. What are your thoughts?

  2. I wonder about that too, Sara, but I think this time I’m safe. This is all background to the novel. Out of the seven stops, most material doesn’t appear anywhere else. The bit that does comes from the prologue, which didn’t make it into the final version of Heaven’s Prey. I’ve kept the prologue as a “bonus feature” that will show up on my site later.
