About the Book
In a complicated, busy world, do you ever feel overwhelmed and insignificant? The heartfelt stories in this collection will take you to a quiet place and remind you that simple acts of love can make a lifetime of difference.
You’ll be amused, encouraged, and inspired to reflect on ways you’ve been shown love, and to consider how you might show more love in the future.
The men, women, and children in these stories experienced love in ways they’d never have thought of, from people they might not normally have noticed, and in surprising places:
on the wrong side of the tracks in small-town Ontario
beside a wood burning stove in the Central African Republic
in the words of an old letter in a New Brunswick house
next to a burned-out Saskatchewan farmhouse
upon a deserted country road in British Columbia
adjacent to a chopped-down jackfruit tree in the Philippines
over a table in an empty Alberta restaurant
at a bus stop in a Quebec city
from the bombed-out ruins of a house in the Netherlands
We hope the stories in this book will encourage you to make a difference in the lives of the people around you by showing love toward them, even when you don’t feel particularly loving.
“I love this collection of stories and poems told by great Canadians; stories of real people that transcend the ages. Many of these stories felt like they were a leaf from my own life book. You will find this reading hilarious, therapeutic and inspirational. A must-read for all book lovers.” —Randall W. Young, Manager, Artists Relationships, World Vision Canada
From the Foreword by author and speaker Sheila Wray Gregoire.
There is so much sorrow in the world.
Many days, as I lace up my shoes and zip up my fleece jacket to head outside for my prayer walk, my heart is heavy. So much bad news. So much pain. What must God feel when He looks down at us?
But what if that bad news isn’t the end of the story? What if there’s more going on below the surface—simple stories, that we often don’t see?
Yes, there is much sadness and evil in the world, but in the midst of all that sadness there is a simple antidote, and it’s just this: Love.
Love your neighbour. It was revolutionary when Jesus said it two thousand years ago, and it can be revolutionary today, too—if we can just grab hold of it.
John Lennon once imagined a world with no heaven—such a world is pretty bleak indeed.
But imagine a world with real love.
That love doesn’t have to be shown as big acts! Jesus said bringing a cup of cold water in His name is love. Love is simply shining a light in what is otherwise a very dark world.
This book is all about those acts of love that make the biggest difference. It’s choosing to see beyond the old clothes of the lonely old man at your door. It’s choosing to let the resentment you felt towards an inadequate father float away as you see his own challenges with new eyes. It’s choosing to share balls of yarn with desperate refugees who land in your corner of the world.
In these pages you will find tales of love—love for a parent, for a friend, for a stranger—that span Canadian hockey rinks and African villages and Philippine homes. You will find people choosing hope in the midst of a panicky Alberta hospital room, choosing God in the midst of Alzheimer’s, choosing peace in the midst of losing a child….
