Book Excerpt

The Fall Feather Fair was just around the corner. Janoose the Goose was busy at the feather factory working to get enough feather pillows made for Mr. Rooster, the Feather Factory owner, to give away to the Fair goers.

“We have almost all the pillows made. Maybe we just need one or two more loads of feathers and we are done,” Janoose told her co-workers Mallard the Duck and Margie the Hen who were stuffing pillows as Janoose poured feathers into the hopper.

“Mr. Rooster was mad when I came back with the bags. He said I only brought eight bags back and that the order was for 10 bags. I loaded 10 bags onto the truck at Free Range Farm. I know I did! What could have happened that two bags are missing?” Janoose complained, looking at the chalkboard near their work station. “See, the wrong number is written on the chalkboard. It says 8 when it use to say 10.”

“And you can see the smudge marks where the numbers were switched, Janoose,” Margie told her. “Do you remember, the delivery before this one was two bags short, too!”

Mallard’s eyes moved left to right and back again. “Maybe for that order the bags fell off the truck,” he stammered, looking away. “That must have been what happened. Yeah – yeah, that must have been it.”
